ALL food systems are violent. Or not. Depending on how you see it, where you stand, what you receive. Whose body does the work? Whose bank balance increases? Why is pain only measured in blood? And not sweat/ tears? Whose land is ravaged for your rice (& mine)? Pls think?

🥀However heavily quantitative his work on ecology databases can get, Achyut Banerjee maintains that he is a 'botanist at heart'. 'I don’t need to measure the height/weight of a particular plant species to acknowledge the beauty of a flower that blooms.”

In the recent Periyar fish kill, 🐟 across species died. “This indicates that changes in💧quality have occurred. If it was a pathological agent such as a🦠, some species would have been more prone.” - Devika Pillai, aquatic health researcher at KUFOS.

Kerala's waterbodies usually make for pristine pictures, but the latest fish kill in is a reminder that they are in bad shape. Spoke to some scientists to understand what leads to these events, how they are diagnosed & what it means for us.

Lovely article by Nandita J covering the intriguing work of Krishnapriya Tamma Krishnapriya Tamma from Azim Premji University (and a former postdoc from our lab!)

I couldn’t agree more ! I tried to do something similar in neuroscience, education and learning and believe its the only way to get policy makers to listen. Look forward to meeting Achyut some day Nandita J

Wonderful article by Nandita J! The spider mentioned here looks very similar to an ant and was thought to be a good mimic. But when Krishnapriya Tamma, Divya, and I quantified their resemblance we found that's not entirely true! Numbers can help reveal surprising nuances to stories!

If you ever wondered which was the hill Krishnapriya Tamma would die on, it's this😉“People tend to forget that ecology is a science. If you want to scientifically examine a pattern/phenomenon, then you have to use a quantification/analytical tool.”

Somewhere around high school, we become irreversibly labelled as either being 'good' or 'bad' at maths. And somehow many of us who choose to study biology are in 'bad' category😵‍💫 This was the case 20 years ago when I was in school & it seems that it's still kind of so?

Fortunate to be attending the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting in a few weeks, as a journalist. Looking forward to meeting other journos & young scientists who will be there, and hopefully bringing some kickass science stories back home🙂 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings

Just got a big kick out of realising 'atom economy' is a thing & I think this could carry me through the hump day 🤩 Am I just emotionally volatile or is it a scicommer thing?
