Telegram advertises itself as a private messaging app, and has attracted over 800 million users.

But Telegram is one of the last apps I'd recommend if you're looking for private communication.

I explain why in our latest video.

Super excited to be this year's surprise speaker at Swiss Cloud Native day this month!

I'll be talking about the importance of building privacy into the infrastructure of the internet 🛡️

Apple's statement is the death knell for the idea that it's possible to scan everyone's comms AND preserve privacy.

Apple has many of the best cryptographers + software eng on earth + infinite $.

If they can't, no one can. (They can't. No one can.)

Nothing highlights just how normalized surveillance has become than reading historical accounts of past surveillance.

1970: The govt wants financial records each time I buy a house? That's unconstitutional!
2023: Of course the govt is collecting bulk data from my banking app.

Making the Internet “kid safe” is impossible, but using these laws to control speech and free expression for most people? That’s entirely possible. theverge.com/2023/8/29/2384…

I'm increasingly shocked at how dishonest companies can be when collecting data.

Consumers are not simply voluntarily handing it over: companies go out of their way to hide what's being collected, & trick consumers into agreeing to things.

It's fraud and we need to push back.

Data brokers harvest everything about us & sell access to the most private areas of our lives.

Govts are some of their biggest clients.

We pull back the curtain a little on the hidden world of data brokers & State surveillance.

Using cash in large amounts, instead of presumed innocence, there's a systematized presumption of guilt:

'This activity is suspicious and will be further investigated.'

Our culture associates financial privacy with criminality.

This isn't how a free society should operate.

In the coming years, each society will decide whether privacy is a right, or a crime.

Two very different worlds await such societies.

CSW has a lawsuit arguing that 'open source devs have fiduciary duty to their users.'

(He wants them to 'recover' coins for him)

But the implications for the WHOLE of open source if he wins is terrifying.

This legal battle could use your help:

Here are our initial thoughts on today's Tornado Cash indictment. The factual allegations of unlicensed money transmission are in conflict with FinCEN's longstanding guidance that an 'anonymizing software provider is not a money transmitter.'

Should we arrest Bill Gates too? I hear that the money launderers also used Windows computers for their criminal activities...

Tornado Cash Devs created a decentralized technology for financial privacy. Now they're being held liable for events that took place years after they'd destroyed their admin keys.

We must push back against the attack on privacy. Financial privacy is vital for a free society.

Roman Semenov is being designated due to events that took place in April 2022, two years after they destroyed the Tornado Cash admin keys.

Extremely problematic.
