Woah! This was an epic 2 hours interview about privacy.
I had a great time chatting to John Papola, we cover the history of financial surveillance, car privacy, the ethos of privacy and why it's essential for maintaining a balance of power in a free society and so much more 🛡️

I have 2 big questions after watching this interview.
1) What were the open source libraries that US govt wanted Telegram Messenger to include in their app? Kind of terrifying.
2) Pavel is an awesome supporter of privacy: but why rely on trusting humans not to hand over data, instead of

Just called both my senators, took a total of 2 mins.
- Dial 202-224-3121 & ask to be put through to your senator
- When you're through, leave the msg: 'I'm calling as a constituent & I urge you to block the 'everyone is a spy' provision of the surveillance bill that just passed…

Privacy is one directional. Once it's gone we can't get it back, so it pays to be strategic about what we reveal to the world.

Jim Himes is the same representative that keeps trying to expand Treasury powers and remove financial surveillance checks and balances with the Special Measures bill.

The NSA is just 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 from taking over the internet, and it's not on the front page of any newspaper--because no one has noticed.

There are certain powers a government should not have in a democracy. The ability to force ordinary businesses and individuals to serve as surrogate spies is one of them. Even if the targets are supposed to be foreigners, a power this sweeping WILL be abused. 19/25

I recently went to SXSW, where they try to get you to download their app in order to see the schedule.
Reminder: apps usually have super invasive permissions. Wherever possible, instead of downloading extra apps, just visit their website through a good browser 🛡️

If you were mad about your House rep voting to let the government spy on you without a warrant ('FISA 702' - fy-za seven-oh-two), we may have one last shot. CALL YOUR REP @ (202) 224-3121 and say '𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟳𝟬𝟮, 𝗜 𝘃𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂.'

This is how the Constitution dies.

By a tie vote, the amendment to require a warrant to spy on Americans goes down in flames.

This is a sad day for America.

The Speaker doesn’t always vote in the House, but he was the tie breaker today. He voted against warrants.

That’s bad enough. But the House also voted for the amendment many of us have been calling “Patriot Act 2.0.” This will force ordinary American businesses that provide wifi to their customers to give the NSA access to their wifi equipment to conduct 702 surveillance. 6/14

As I've been saying: if the administration and DOJ don’t want FISA 702 to expire, they need to engage with Congress on meaningful reforms that protect national security AND Americans' constitutional rights. Until then, we'll keep waiting for them to come to the table.

Pervasive surveillance absolutely makes sense if your aim is to create an authoritarian dystopia.

If it is not, we should rebalance power back in favor of the individual.
