A chapter of the mostly forgotten War of 1812, 210 years ago, British troops burned most of the public buildings in #WashingtonDC, including the White House & Capitol. Scarred, but strong, the city's buildings were rebuilt & Americans took a renewed pride in their capital city.

#OTD in 1776, General George Washington and his Continental troops defending Long Island, NY were overwhelmed by flanking attacks from British forces & barely escaped capture. Learning from the loss, Washington kept his army alive & won later battles, and the American Revolution.

Like the first Battle of Manassas, the Second Battle of Manassas –ended #OTD in 1862– was a defeat for the Union. Resolved to save the country, President Lincoln urged his generals to resume the attack, hoping for a victory to change the course of the Civil War.

Planning to take over the world, Nazi Germany invaded Poland on Sept. 1, 1939, starting World War II. Over the following 6 years, the war spread around the globe, bringing in the U.S. after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The WWII Memorial honors all who fought for freedom.

It's not over until the paperwork is done. Though the American colonies declared independence in 1776 & the Continental Army won the decisive Battle of Yorktown in 1781, it wasn't until this day in 1783 that the Treaty of Paris was signed, officially ending the Revolutionary War.

We're so excited! The East Potomac Park Mini Golf Course is open again! After a maintenance & repair project over several months, visitors are back to putting on this fun hidden gem. Built in 1931, it is the oldest continuously-operated miniature golf course in the U.S.
