Common Rosefinch at Tresta this morning

Another incredible days birding on #Unst. Double figure Red backed Shrike across the isle. Spotted Fly, Red breasted fly, Lesser w Throat, Garden Warbler & a Marsh Warbler in a single Baliasta garden.. Amazing 💥💥💥 RbF library 📷 #Unst no megas. Yet!! 😉

An incredible day Fair Isle Bird Obs yesterday was all about the Red-backed Shrikes, with a conservative count of 32(!) scattered across the isle, with birds hunting on every fenceline, singing in the gardens, sheltering on the beaches and geos, and even groups out on the open heather 🤯

Well, yesterday was not one to be a Shetland Bee or a Silver Y here on Fair Isle, as the second-largest arrival of Red-backed Shrikes in Obs' history, touched down on fenceposts, heather hillsides and Rosa bushes from north to south. More here: fairislebirdobs.co.uk/latest_sightin… Pic A Penn

5 male and 3 female Red-backed Shrikes today! That's just in the areas that I've covered, of course. Bound to be more on the island.

Swans' nests in Shetland: left Whooper, right Mute. Productivity of Shetland Whoopers has historically been low, whilst Mutes have increased. Shetland Mutes include a high proportion of birds with 'Polish' traits.

I did say they were getting a tad closer...

We can’t believe we’re saying this, but it’s the 16th August and THERE ARE STILL PUFFINS at Sumburgh Head! We’re watching the last few on the cliffs from the comfort of our Observatory, where you can enjoy a hot drink and homebakes by Jillian at The Picnic Press.

This lovely Green Sandpiper was a nice surprise catch Fair Isle Bird Obs - beautiful things to see up close, with an oily green sheen across the upperparts that field views never reveal
