More Puffin shenanigans for the Sumburgh Head burrows. We love watching the way Puffins interact. To find out more about these hardy, characterful seabirds, pop along to our Marine Life Centre and Observatory, open Thursdays to Mondays.

An incredible day Fair Isle Bird Obs yesterday was all about the Red-backed Shrikes, with a conservative count of 32(!) scattered across the isle, with birds hunting on every fenceline, singing in the gardens, sheltering on the beaches and geos, and even groups out on the open heather 🤯

Well, yesterday was not one to be a Shetland Bee or a Silver Y here on Fair Isle, as the second-largest arrival of Red-backed Shrikes in Obs' history, touched down on fenceposts, heather hillsides and Rosa bushes from north to south. More here: fairislebirdobs.co.uk/latest_sightin… Pic A Penn

5 male and 3 female Red-backed Shrikes today! That's just in the areas that I've covered, of course. Bound to be more on the island.

Swans' nests in Shetland: left Whooper, right Mute. Productivity of Shetland Whoopers has historically been low, whilst Mutes have increased. Shetland Mutes include a high proportion of birds with 'Polish' traits.

One of the biggest falls of Red-backed Shrike in contemporary British birding history took place on the Northern Isles in recent days, including record-breaking numbers in Orkney: bit.ly/4bfIbW9

A magical moonlit moment with #Mousabroch Storm Petrels last week. This has been a mindseye image I’ve dreamt about for some time, the dainty but iconic silhouette of the smallest seabird in the world against the full moon. #stormpetrel #seabirds #shetland thanks The Mousa Boat

Did you know the new longevity record for Black Guillemot is 24 years, 10 months and 15 days? 😮 This is for a bird ringed as a nestling on North Ronaldsay and recaptured in the same place. #Ornithology #BirdFacts 📷 Black Guillemot by Sarah Kelman/BTO

1st ever for #Shetland with a Large Spotty-eyed Dronefly - Eristalinus aeneus landing on our boat in Victoria Pier, Lerwick yesterday! Never thought I’d see one of these on the Isles though frequent around coastal UK spring south and west. Found by Phil Harris! #hoverfly #insects

Dream find on 1st August with a small Brown Hamburger bean M.sloanei found within minutes of stepping onto a local #Shetland beach after a month away! We’ve found several red hamburger and sea hearts but this is our first brown, summer find! #seabean #beachcomber #tropicalbean

We can’t believe we’re saying this, but it’s the 16th August and THERE ARE STILL PUFFINS at Sumburgh Head! We’re watching the last few on the cliffs from the comfort of our Observatory, where you can enjoy a hot drink and homebakes by Jillian at The Picnic Press.

This lovely Green Sandpiper was a nice surprise catch Fair Isle Bird Obs - beautiful things to see up close, with an oily green sheen across the upperparts that field views never reveal
