500 pages of finely crafted words. A very rich book - not always easy to follow - but all the better for its complexities and massive range.

On International Workers Memorial Day - recalling the Marcinelle mining disaster of 1956; the deadliest day in the history of Belgian coal mining. Fire swept through the pit, claiming 262 lives, of whom 136 were Italian guest workers. One English miner was also among the dead.

I’m reading Chosen Country by John Dos Passos. Much of it is about the attractions of Paris to Americans who had served in the Great War and stayed on. When I wrote 1923, that was a small recurring theme. I like this passage - the main protagonist falling for the French capital.
