Have you ever heard of the great auk? The story of this flightless bird can teach us a great deal about the dangers of human greed to the natural world. 👇

🚶‍♀️If a visit to the museum hasn't worn you out you could go for a stroll around #TringPark or why not look around the High Street and see if you can spot some other Rothschild buildings. This sign was for the pub where Walter's staff used to gather after work.

Join us to build a habitat from LEGO® bricks where endangered animals, people and nature can all call home together. Can you build a safe tunnel for hedgehogs or create a way to stop pollution from getting into the habitat of sea turtles? nhm.ac.uk/visit/tring/wh…

Skeleton of a Reticulated Python, with angled light picking out the bones. The Natural History Museum in Tring is one of my places on darkening afternoons. The gothic filigree of the snake’s ribs in the shadows of the cabinet always makes me pause here. NHM at Tring

Dragonfly or Damselfly? Its tricky! One key difference is that damselflies rest with their wings folded lengthways along their body 💤

🐑☀️It might be summer, but we're thinking of April 2023 when we refurbished some of the cases in Gallery Five. It was a big job involving lots of teams across the museum. Doesn't the gallery look empty without all the specimens on the bottom of the case! #ThrowbackThursday

On this day in 1892 the Museum officially opened. It took Walter 3 years to create the Museum after receiving the land and the money as a 21st birthday present from his parents.

🐶Meet Robin the Toy Trawler Spaniel, it was bred by Lady Wentworth who was a well respected dog breeder in 1911. Robin died at the age of nine by which time the breed was already nearly extinct, it is extinct today. #NHMTring

In Walter's day there was a taxidermy showroom in Piccadilly, London where the taxidermist Rowland Ward would display his specimens. Walter bought this Lynx specimen from the showroom for the museum. The bamboo used around the base adds to the overall effect. #ThrowbackThursday
