New Almaden was discovered in the 1820s and is the site of California’s oldest mining operation. The mines of this area, collectively known as the “New Almaden Mines”, produced mercury for well over 100 years. In this photo, miners work by candlelight in a New Almaden mine.

Throwing it back to the early 1900s, when Fairview, Nevada, was buzzing with excitement during the mining boom. Silver was discovered in 1905, bringing the town to life with 27 saloons, hotels, banks, and even a miner’s union hall! By 1906, Fairview was home to around 2000 people
