Oak gall, iron and two layers of leaf indigo. This deep forest green will dry much lighter but I’m liking these dark inky tones against the cloudscape today.

A much cooler weather pattern is on the way in California--and there's even the possibility that some spots will see light precip this weekend. Although it will be windy at times, this will further mitigate ongoing SoCal wildfire activity in short term! #CAwx #CAfire [1/4]

A slightly autumnal feel in the garden this afternoon despite the sunshine. This Comma butterfly (Polygonia c-album) blending in well amongst the changing leaves.

Our letter in Science Magazine highlights the critical threat to Asian trees such as Nothapodytes, a vital source of cancer-fighting drug camptothecin. We must act now to ensure the conservation of these trees and the supply of such life-saving drugs. Led by Gao Chen at KIB

Thorns = sharp stems (palms don’t have them). Spines = sharp leaves or leaf parts (v. few palms). Many palms have petiole teeth (but all teeth are not the same). Prickles (v. common) = epidermal outgrowths, like these on Calamus muricatus leaf sheath & petiole. #Arecaceae #palms
