Peat swamps are an enigma. We (Mike Waddington Brian Branfireun and S. Kaufman) dust off ~20yr-old data to help unravel how temperate peat swamp hydrogeomorphic setting impacts water flow and carbon stocks. #PeatPaper doi.org/10.1002/eco.26…

New paper with Kristyn Mayner, Paul Moore, Mike Waddington, and Sophie Wilkinson is out! We explored post-wildfire vegetation recovery in peatland middles and margins, with implications for wildfire vulnerability and carbon storage. #PeatPaper #PeatTwitter doi.org/10.1007/s13157…

Just four 2023 wildfires near historic mining centre potentially released 69–183 Mg of arsenic, equivalent to ∼0.5-1.0% of global annual industrial arsenic production. Over the last 52 years, 41–562 Mg of arsenic were likely released due to #wildfires. tinyurl.com/2px3m24s

Day 3 of #PeatMetal and Restoring Industrially Impacted Peatlands International Workshops was a blast touring around metal contaminated peatlands near Sudbury. Great to show our almost ready restoration trial site and talk all things peat, metals, and restoration!

We have a new preprint on Earth & Space Science Open Archive mapping peat depth and carbon storage of the Hudson Bay Lowlands. Peat depth increases with increasing distance from the coastline due to ongoing glacial isostatic adjustment since ice retreat began. essopenarchive.org/doi/full/10.22…

Very busy day getting ~35,000 kg of peatland restoration material into our metal contaminated peatland in the Laurentian University - Université Laurentienne Greenspace. We are testing 3 different treatments to figure out what works! #PeatTwitter cbc.ca/news/canada/su…

In the Georgian Bay Biosphere, at-risk turtles nest in shallow soil on #CanadianShield rock. BUT when #wildfire occurs, much of the soil burns off & erodes. Not only does this reduce the number of spots where #turtles can lay eggs, but also affects suitability of remaining nest habitat
