There’s not some huge mystery here. US politics is largely polarized by educational attainment now and that shift started in 08 and accelerated in 16.

Violent crime is obviously very bad, but what upsets people on a day-to-day basis is disorder. That’s why “ackthusly the murder rate is low” has been a wildly ineffective retort to complaints about rising shoplifting, fare skipping, drug dealing and other anti-social behavior.
