Updated XBB COVID vaccine available from 7 March. Pharmac has approved the updated COVID vaccine for the XBB.1.5 strain to be used in New Zealand from 7 March 2024. The XBB vaccine is more effective against more recent subvariants of COVID in New Zealand.

After 30 April 2024 Novavax (original formulation) will NOT be available until the updated XBB.1.5 vaccine is approved by Medsafe. PHARMAC and Ministry of Health - Manatū Hauora advise that current stock of Novavax expires 30 April 2024. People who can't take mRNA vaccines deserve protection too.

Heads up: #Novavax is preparing for private / retail vaccine provision in New Zealand and Australia. This includes offering single vial doses, instead of 5 dose vials.

Pharmac advises that the Covid paediatric vaccine for children aged 5 to 11 years is switching to the updated XBB.1.5 Pfizer vaccine on 30 May 2024. No date yet for an update to the infant vaccine for < 5 year olds.

Hot off the press Dr Shane Reti confirms the government’s intention to continue funding antivirals and vaccines beyond 30 June 2024. Shane Reti stated there is NO change to eligibility criteria.
