Good article in FT by Simon Kuper on the riots emphasising what’s always seemed obvious to me: rioting is fun…until it isn’t. Also nice quote from Tim Newburn

General relief in the household as daughter got the grades she needs to do Natural Sciences at Durham. Definitely inherited her mother’s rather than my analytical skills.

✍️ Dr Martina Baradel & DPhil student Niles Breuer examine the structure of drug trafficking networks in Japan. The new study finds that larger, more complex networks prioritise efficiency, even at the cost of increased security risks. Read more ⬇️ sociology.ox.ac.uk/article/mappin…

Visited Pembroke Castle today (like a big kid I like castles) learned that it was originally painted white ( I assume lime wash). Being the local castle painter must have been a nice little earner. And what a sight when the peasants looked up from the fields.

In Tenby Museum today which has a very nice display of Augustus John sketches & a few portraits, including this one he made of Richard Hughes, one of my favourite novelists. He only complete 4 novels, all v good. High Wind in Jamaica is a “children’s book” for adults.

Back from a 2 weeks in Wales including a week in Tenby. Lovely little town, unpretentious but great character. Largely intact town walls, great beaches, good places to eat & a lot of cultural associations - Augustus & Gwen John, Nina Hammett, George Eliot, Nelson & Lady Hamilton

Massive vindication for my colleague Michael Biggs whose work is instrumental in bringing this about & suffered baseless personal attacks for his pains. It's part of our job to root out crap data without fear or favour, whoever is producing it, even a national statistical agency.

Worth also noting that there are hundreds of academics working in UK institutions who would have had Michael Biggs' research suppressed if they could, and tried their hardest to disparage his character and discredit his work.

The primary school I first went to 58 years ago. Headmistress Miss Roberts. Boot fund, smelly 1/3 pint milk, Post Office savings stamps, concrete playground, rain shelter, no football allowed, British bulldog.
