Publication day! I assembled my favorite Greco-Roman stories about women in power (Amazons, Dido, Boudicca, Cleopatra and many more), in both new and existing translations. You can find it (and see the TOC) here: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/667325/w…

On my recent visit to the #BritishMuseum, I ran across the pilaster capital below … one of six in the museum that used to decorate the interior of the #Pantheon in Rome. What?? How did it come to be in London? 1/ 117-125 CE 📸 me

#ReliefWednesday The Prima Porta Augustus is teeming with symbolism on the highly decorated cuirass. Gods, such as Venus (a nod to Julius Caesar’s divine ancestry) and military conquests like the Parthian returning the lost standard are all part of the publicity here!

#ReliefWednesday The fragment of the funerary stele of Olympiodoros (101-200 AD) is back from the Gallo-Romeins Museum in Tongeren (Belgium) where it was on display for the exhibition Gods in color - Polychromy in Antiquity. On the tympanum there are the tools of a marmorarius.

For #ReliefWednesday, one of the reliefs from the Arch of Portugal. The scene is the Apotheosis (deification) of Sabina, Hadrian’s wife, whose body is burning on the funeral pyre, her spirit soaring on the back of Aeternitas (Eternity). 1/ 2nd c. CE, Musei Capitolini 📸 me

Play your own kind of music. This #ReliefWednesday we're back in the granducal collections of #Florence to examine a #cameo showing a summer concert of #Erotes, with a naked lady who has everything and more - in fact, this is a #PhallusThursday piece too! LJ Trafford

In the early 60s, a small villa was excavated in Stabia, the Villa Carmiano. Its triclinium was painted with unique frescoes, including this one below which may depict Ceres and Bacchus. But perhaps instead Thetis and Achilles? #FrescoFriday Archaeological Museum of Stabia 📸 me

For #FrescoFriday we return to the collection of #EvanGorga in #palazzoAltemps, where a fourth-style wall in #fresco and #stucco hints at the mastery of #Augustan decorative arts in #Rome. Tantalisingly incomplete, we can only guess at its significance.
