CPD promised more oversight on traffic stops after officers killed Dexter Reed seconds after pulling him over for a seatbelt violation. But my latest investigation revealed 20,000 stops a month hidden from the watchdogs meant to prevent racial profiling: buff.ly/4fNivmx

A third of all Chicago Police traffic stops are off-the-books, with no paper trail. For those unreported stops, there is no way to track who is stopped, which neighborhoods are being targeted, or whether the stops (and subsequent searches) were justified buff.ly/4fNivmx

Annual reports on Chicago Police traffic stops look really bad at face value. Massive numbers of stops. Huge racial disparities. But the situation is even worse than it looks, because CPD conducts hundreds of thousands more stops than they tell the public: buff.ly/4fNivmx

I've reported on Chicago Police traffic stops for years, and the sheer numbers of stops is so out of step with other cities, it's hard to wrap your head around. But I uncovered 200k more stops a year than what CPD reports to watchdogs meant to prevent police abuse 🧵:

mayor brandon johnson (refusing to answer a question about unreported traffic stops from Injustice Watch) at the CPD press conference just now: “the city of chicago has just displayed some of the best policing in america”

Prominent election deniers are supporting a slate of Florida Republicans who are running to lead local election offices. But roughly half of the slate lost in Tuesday’s GOP primaries. NEW in Bolts from @pascal_sabino: boltsmag.org/florida-superv…

Chicago's mayor was just asked about the troubling investigation by Pascal that found hundreds of thousands (!!) of 'secret' police stops in Chicago. (The story's a collab between Bolts & Injustice Watch: boltsmag.org/chicago-police…) Johnson, well, deflects:

Shout out to Carlos Ballesteros for pressing CPD Superintendent Snelling to explain the hundreds of thousands of off-the-books traffic stops that police hide from the public

In Florida, a slate of far right candidates who have spread debunked claims of mass voter fraud are running to take control over local election systems. Voters rebuked most in Tuesday's Republican primary. But a handful will advance to the November ballot: buff.ly/4duzwjI

Chicago police made nearly 200,000 secret traffic stops last year. The findings come at a time when the police department’s targeting of Black neighborhoods with thousands of traffic stops has come under increased scrutiny. boltsmag.org/chicago-police…

We noted that Chicago police have bucked the national trend of declining traffic stops (making a lot of stops that have little to do with street safety). Bolts + Injustice Watch find that they're making *even more* stops than we thought: boltsmag.org/chicago-police…

According to a new investigation, the #Chicago Police Department has released incomplete data to oversight agencies, made as many as 20,000 off-the-books stops in recent months, and increased its traffic enforcement in Black neighborhoods. boltsmag.org/chicago-police…
