The Olympics are a great chance to teach real-life examples of how people (scientists, politicians, journalists, etc.) can manipulate statistical analysis methods until they get the result that supports their hypothesis.

I’m lost for words when i see the idea of “automating science” being celebrated and presented as the epitome of advancement

I've updated the draft preprint of my forthcoming book (osf.io/preprints/psya…) with a new chapter on "Universals". Also added abstract and summary figure for the chapter on the history of comparative musicology. Feedback appreciated!

What happened when MIT stopped paying Elsevier? Not much except they are saving a lot of money. "MIT is interested in collaborating with other libraries to reinvest these funds in community-controlled open publishing initiatives..." sparcopen.org/our-work/big-d…

Researchers should stop paying to publish their papers. Tom Morgan and I wrote a short piece about it. 1/3 osf.io/preprints/osf/…

1/5 Preprint alert – horn tootin time! Proud to present two megaprojects: the end product of 6 years of work on melodies and scales. One comparison of theories of the evolution of scales using global scale data. One on cross-cultural constraints on melodies and scale size.

How did they miss the chance to call this “The Finale of Finale”? But yes, I switched from (paid) Sibelius and Finale to (free) Musescore years ago and have never looked back.

This has been a really cool paper to be involved in! I was actually a bit surprised by how consistent the melody over harmony effect was:

Feeling like I warped back in time a decade or two hearing Eminem, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga all over the radio. Just need to get Pitbull or Lil Jon to do some cameos and the cycle will be complete.
