One of the most essential ways to move justice forward is to cultivate belonging. When people feel known, held and loved by community, they feel responsible for its flourishing—and empowered to make that change.

When are alone and isolated, they are easier to exploit: More likely to accept abusive work conditions, substandard housing, government neglect. Belonging tells us: "We don't have to take this. We can have better, and will win the world we deserve."

Lonely folks are also easier to radicalize: More vulnerable to internet algorithms that push people into extremism, or lies about how "those people" are responsible for their pain. Belonging reminds people we are inextricably connected—that all flourishing is mutual.

If we don't cultivate communal connection, a sea of nefarious voices are waiting to fill that gap. Snakeoil salesmen with all their supplements. Men's Rights "coaches" selling anger and resentment. White supremacists offering belonging through violence.

Democracy cannot function in a sea of isolation and despair. These circumstances will only birth more oligarchy and fascism. Whether it's a house of worship, book group, running club or library: Build spaces where people know they are loved—exactly as they walk through the door.
