34 years ago today. The Space Shuttle Challenger exploded a little more than a minute after liftoff, killing all seven crew members. Michele McDonald, a photographer with the Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Star, captured this photo of the explosion.

Feb. 6, 1935 — the demolition of the former Norfolk Landmark newspaper building, located on E. Main St. The office operated from 1870 to 1911, and on January 1, 1912, it was consolidated with the Virginian-Pilot. The Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel is located here today.
