First-ever: We've identified a new astronomical object, 'Buried Planet', using SEISMOLOGY, rather than telescopes. It's a survivor of Theia, the planet that collided with Earth 4.5 billion years ago to form our Moon. See our nature cover paper: rdcu.be/dp16K

A smart and efficient way to retrieve surface waves and characterize noise sources simultaneously by sequencing ambient noise cross-correlations! Cool work done by As. Prof. Hongjian Fang Hongjian Fang at Sun Yet-Sen University.

Our latest AGU (American Geophysical Union) GRL paper dives into an interesting question: Were there variations of intermediate-depth earthquakes before and after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake? By building a more complete earthquake catalog, we are closer to answers. Discover more: doi.org/10.1029/2023GL…

Quantum Physics says that we can know the whole very well but it is impossible to know the details. In seismology, there is always more if we look deeper. Check out a simple case of looking at individual noise cross-correlation functions here doi.org/10.1785/022023…… #SRL .

Beyond Solid Earth, submarine DAS is also great for studying acoustics. From an active experiment offshore Martha's vineyard last year, we observe near-field acoustic notch due to mode interference and its sensitivity to sedimentary velocity.

Lithosphere unzipping/tearing beneath mature continent collision zones? Is it the case for an incipient collisional zone (e.g. Banda) ? Interesting idea to think about 🤔

I experienced the first earthquake alarm in Univ Tokyo Lodge triggered by these two this morning, on the second week I arrived in Japan. Heard that experienced seismologist in Japan could even tell epicenter distance by "feeling the shaking".
