Cops and prosecutors in Indianapolis are stealing money by trolling through a FedEx hub. Institute for Justice is suing to stop them (and end the practice of legalized theft that is euphemistically called #CivilForfeiture). I regret to inform this commenter that neither I nor Institute for Justice--as a public-interest law firm providing free legal representation in a case that seeks no money damages--stand to make millions from the lawsuit.

Such an important issue. Take the 5th Cir. last week. Prisoner has broken screws in his ankle causing extreme pain. Defs ignore it & *still* require manual field work. CA5 correctly rejects QI arg. that no previous case involved ankle screws. But w/ a more rigid test: QI applies.

The Georgia Public Service Commission just ruled that a private railroad's plan to take land from several property owners is a "public use" and they should receive the state's eminent domain power. Institute for Justice and our clients will appeal this ruling to the Fulton County Superior Court.

Regardless of your position on #CivilForfeiture* Rebel Ridge was genuinely great - well written, well acted, well paced, well shot. You should watch it. *You should also hold civil forfeiture in utter contempt because it’s literally legalized theft by the government and evil.

For all those Netflix users googling “is civil asset forfeiture real,” it very much is. Watch the Nevada Highway Patrol steal the life savings of a Marine who was *never* charged with a crime. It’s government theft: youtu.be/MkeS_0NQUZs?si…

Gov't should praise good Samaritans, not fine them. But that's what Santa Clara, CA, is doing to Institute for Justice client Michael Ballard. After Ballard allowed a valued employee and his family to live on Ballard's 60-acre vineyard, the county fined him $120,000. Shame. youtube.com/watch?v=J9s1VW…
