.Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan is delighted to once again be supporting Londoners to transform their streets into spaces for play and street parties on World Car Free Day this September. Reclaim your street with this fantastic initiative, which supports our aim for a greener, fairer London

Very happy to add my voice to this clear, well-argued call to take children’s needs seriously when thinking about the streets, public spaces and neighbourhoods where families live.

"...we no longer see children, no longer hold space for them, no longer invite them to explore the spaces and streets that make up their neighbourhoods. They are a missing presence, and we are all suffering for it." Thanks to the Town & Country Planning Association for their work to improve things!

Absolutely devastating for the children of Leicester and the world of play. We need action - and funding - to make sure that these adventure playgrounds are saved, for children now and in the future. It's #PlayDay 2024 tomorrow. Children deserve better than this .

All 9 Leicester's adventure playgrounds are having their funding cut. 14 years of central govt cuts to LA funding mean that LAs can now only focus on their statutory duties and sadly, opportunities to play is not a statutory duty. Thanks Harriet Grant for your persistent coverage

It’s #PlayDay2024 and the theme this year is “play - the culture of childhood”. Play is how children & young people create and engage with cultural worlds, shaping space, making meaning and having fun. We should celebrate - and advocate for - play every day. Happy Playday!

It's not just about austerity and 'cuts' when we lose children's play spaces - we have to get a deeper understanding of the importance of play back into the heart of local / central government. Play England are calling for legislation that would protect children's play spaces.

The young of our species need and want to play. This was true back in the 1980s when Playday was launched by a handful of dedicated London playworkers. It is still true today. Happy #playday2024 everyone!

The cost of closing Leicester's nine well-used and much-loved Adventure Playgrounds - to individuals, wider society and future council budgets - is far higher than the cost of keeping them open. They employ people, feed families and give space, exercise and JOY to countless kids!

‘Society prefers children who aren’t seen and not heard to those who play in our streets’. A great article from KentOnline highlighting the fact that children and teenagers today "can't win" - damned if they don't play out and damned if they do. kentonline.co.uk/news/opinion/s…

The article below also refers to this outrageous story, which you could not make up. Mass house-builder destroys teenagers' self-built (using fallen branches) den in the woods, claiming it has caused "serious environmental harm". 🤯 kentonline.co.uk/maidstone/news…

Well done to Blackpool Council for supporting and promoting play streets - they're doing an amazing job, and the benefits of #PlayingOut to children's health and social connections are being experienced by families and communities across the city ❤️👏
