My first scientific conference was the 50-year celebration of Choquet-Bruhat’s seminal 1952 paper on the initial value problem in general relativity. I considered her to be very old back then. Her sharpness, kindness, and humility at that age made a big impression on me.

Worry about infinity in general relativity? You can determine whether we are at infinity by observing perturbed black holes. Black-hole perturbations eventually switch to a pure power-law decay. Surprisingly, the decay rate is different at finite distances and infinity.
