the real milo Dr. Raven the Science Maven's PODCAST IS OUT! And kids can not consent. Parents expect professionals to be professional. And respect boundaries at all times. Working with kids is a privelege and demonstrating leadership and respect is essential.

Also all of this aside.
Why are you undoing your hair at your place of work??
In all 4 years of teaching no part of me ever considered doing that.

this is the best response I’ve seen to the situation. i didn’t hear about him being any kind of weirdo 😓 regardless I don’t think a grown man and teacher should be eliminating physical boundaries with young girls/students like that. Good intentions but not the best execution :/

This includes parents who force kids to show affection to others, who minimize kids’ concerns and who don’t listen to kids and take action to protect them. Then again, some people want their kids groomed.

And let’s not pretend that as black people we don’t know that doing hair is intimate. It is not always sexual/romantic but it definitely can be, and it’s not healthy to blur those lines with children.

Dr. Raven the Science Maven's PODCAST IS OUT! I feel like so many adults who work with young people did not the training on how to both set appropriate boundaries and to feel comfortable doing it. I have worked in youth development for years and seen so much behavior that is just too friendly.

I can’t RETWEET THIS ENOUGH. Usual abuse doesn’t just start as a straight thing it starts with GROOMING getting the young person used to doing small things with you that might not be a red flag to many people!

I’m not a “science influencer”. I’m a human being and you absolutely shouldn’t hold me to any higher standard. I’m a regular ass person like everyone else and I’m not here to give a performance of your idea of perfection

Dr. Raven the Science Maven's PODCAST IS OUT! Thank you for perfectly explaining this because I was conflicted between boundaries and cultural bonding that is especially specific to us (black hair care) so while I understand the teacher wanting to bond, I agree boundaries are much more important in todays climate.

Dr. Raven the Science Maven's PODCAST IS OUT! As a former teacher I wholeheartedly agree. Part of the teacher's duty is teaching the students boundaries, and also demonstrating how a trustworthy and safe adult interacts with students.
