1922: Ramsay MacDonald elected Leader of the Labour Party.

He says “I hope we are to show that parliamentary methods can serve democracy more effectively than any others”.

He urges his MPs to oppose the government “not as a small minded faction”.

Authentic James Graham bluetick.png If you look at cumulative political donations declared since the start of 2023, it’s clear that the Tories have gone into election gear, significantly outraising Labour.

That wasn’t true earlier in this Parliament - but the figures show a real tipping point since Q1 2023.

The government has just rushed through a raising of election spending limits, without needing to go through a single parliamentary vote.

Great to see Queen Mary topping this list, but a lot of credit should go to London's schools.

Universities never function in isolation: they're woven into & dependent on a much wider social & educational ecosystem. Which is why league tables should always be treated with caution

Agreed - Mishal Husain is very good. She's polite, but firm, and her interruptions generally make answers more likely, rather than more difficult for the audience to hear.

When Lord Home became Foreign Secretary in 1960 - which was highly controversial - Edward Heath was announced in the Commons as 'Deputy Foreign Secretary'.

He was also given a full Cabinet position - Lord Privy Seal - rather than just attending as Minister of State.

Getting ready for another working week, and listening to Emily Maguire singing 'Start Over Again'.

One of the loveliest voices in pop, and strangely appropriate for an evening of teaching prep. youtube.com/watch?v=aS652m…

An absolute privilege to sing at a memorial service for legendary counter-tenor and 'bringer of joy' James Bowman yesterday.

What a voice. And what a life.

Here's a taste of him in action, singing Howell's 'King David'. youtube.com/watch?v=xdAxY4…

The north was 50-38 on multiculturalism success/failure, where GB was 48-36 in this Deltapoll survey in October, so the right media's imaginary North is a stereotype

Rod Liddle writes today that Braverman tends to be approved in the North even though disliked in the South. That is just a false stereotype/projection onto northerners.

Was PM right to sack Braverman?
North: yes 72-15
South: yes 69-17
Midlands: yes 65-22

Over the last week, there's been lots of commentary on where Cleverly sits in the party & what this means for Tory factionalism.

There's much been less on what he might do in office.

So this is a fascinating thread by Sunder Katwala on the new Home Secretary's views on immigration

When you're fine with a prime minister trying to suspend Parliament, but are aghast at young people holding a serious and respectful debate there, you need to rethink your priorities.

Well done to everyone who took part. May you take better care of Parliament than your elders.

Adam Wagner It's an inevitable product of 'simplism': the constant pushing of simplistic solutions to complex problems.

When they fail to work - and they always fail to work - someone must be blamed for sabotaging them.

This week, the Govt has laid several more Statutory Instruments making significant policy changes e.g. on dangerous dogs, immigration law, and import duties on Russian & Belarusian goods. They show how important SIs can be & why their scrutiny matters. 1/
