For too long, governments have poured more and more PUBLIC MONEY into the homelessness crisis without fixing the underlying issues. Without rent control and a major boost in social housing, the next government will push both renters AND councils into ruin.

Great to see Rachel Reeves commit to abolishing no fault evictions in her speech today. As our campaign manager Tom Darling says, to deliver for renters it’s crucial any new bill closes loopholes which could allow 'backdoor' no fault evictions. standard.co.uk/homesandproper…

We cannot rely on the private sector to tackle the housing crisis. That experiment has failed. We need to build more council houses, end Right to Buy and bring in rent controls. Housing isn't a commodity. It's a human right.

The people closest to the pain should be closest to the power – but as these videos collected by the Structural Inequalites Alliance show, the realities of our unequal system are often unheard by decision-makers. Watch the clips: equalitytrust.org.uk/evidence-base/…

Today's #KingsSpeech announced a new Renters’ Rights Bill 🎉 The government must use this as a fresh start to create a strong Bill – which not only ends section 21 no-fault evictions, but tackles eye watering rent hikes and extends notice periods to truly provide security.

Really sobering new stats: 400,000 babies & toddlers in England live in very poor quality homes, as do one million children aged over 5 years old 1,000,000 children live in homes that have hazards such as excessive cold, fire / electrical hazards, etc. 800,000 live in damp homes

Neither weep nor laugh but understand; Article 25 recognizes adequate housing as part of the right to an adequate standard of living.

We’re living in the mass embodiment of the hostile environment designed by Theresa May. When you make universities, hospitals, landlords, workplaces etc into border guards, you rope in the public into being ‘migrant hunters’ This is the violent conclusion of violent state policy

Rising rents increase homelessness, and now Newham Council is facing bankruptcy after an increase in temporary accommodation spending. This affects everyone in our community! We must come together to fight for rent control and secure public housing. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

A million wasted empty homes is far too many.. It's time we stopped the madness of rising numbers of wasted empty homes as homelessness continues to grow and housing affordability declines. Sign our letter to the new Government, calling for action here: actiononemptyhomes.org/lettertolabour

The dark heart of this catastrophe lies in this simple, depressing narrative: the state stepped back, corporate greed stepped in and innocent people died. Bit by me for The Guardian: theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

The govt's new Renters' Rights Bill will be unveiled today! We await the full details - and safeguards will be key to end unfair evictions - but as our director Tom Darling says, it's clear this is “a stronger piece of legislation" than the last attempt theguardian.com/money/article/…

Following the publication of the Renters Rights Bill I will be speaking on a panel with others from the Renters' Reform Coalition next Sunday 3.30 at Labour conference about ‘how should Labour fix the renting crisis’ if you’re around come along!
