You know that thing where you're walking towards someone and you try to get out of each other's way but keep going in the same direction? I saw two bikes do that this morning. Didn't end well.

As with last year's Elsevier negotiations, we are sharing our 'Plan B' for reading and publishing in Springer Nature journals in the event that a deal cannot be reached.

Absolutely brutal. I did my MA in this department while working full time and I would not have gone on to do a PhD without it. We have to preserve the ability for people to study part time and in the evenings if we want the humanities to be for everyone.

Publishing capitalism in its purest form. (Disclaimer: I reviewed one of the 6 papers, horrible experience though the manuscript was interesting, I will never review again for Frontiers)

Lots of parallels between academic publishing and social media including the fact that regulation and policymaking won't fix either of them.

It is exactly because researchers care about selectivity that eLife's new model will work. They're using their brand against itself -- i.e. to change the culture that journal selectivity matters by slowly diluting the value of their own selectivity.
