In view of this piece from Bloomberg, time for an update on what I’m being told about the #HongKong legal market: 1. Corporate/Mergers & Acquisitions-type work are still pretty dead and will be for the foreseeable future. Same for more localised conveyancing legal world given

I'm so grateful for the 300+ signatures on the petition calling on WSJ to reinstate me, org'd by IAPE TNG/CWA 1096 & supported by the NewsGuild-CWA. Thank you. I hope WSJ will respond. The press is stronger when their reporters can join unions. The right to unionize is a basic human right.

Almost three years after the three leaders of the #HKAlliance were arrested and charged of “incitement to subversion” under the Beijing-imposed #NSL, the city’s High Court has finally set a trial date - May 6, 2025. A total of 75 days have been earmarked for the trial.

Carol Ng is a former British Airways flight attendant and union leader in Hong Kong who decided to run for office as a pan-democrat to fight for workers’ rights. For this, the gov’t charged her with subversion. She’s now been in prison for 3.5 years with no sentence issued.

hot take: freedom in Hong Kong is a labor issue... and healthy labor unions are key to freedom anywhere (stares directly at right to work states)

There’s no use in offering legal analysis of a verdict by a notoriously corrupt judge in a notoriously unjust city convicting two respected journalists of sedition for doing their jobs. Instead, I’ll share a translation of defendant Patrick Lam’s brave statement in court today.

Words aren’t enough, Matthew Miller. Anything less than sanctions against responsible officials & judges sends the wrong message to Beijing. And these sanctions are *required* by the Hong Kong Human Rights & Democracy Act Sec. 7 (“The President *shall* impose the sanctions…”).

1 convicted of an alternative lesser charge, 6 acquitted by a jury in a supposed terrorism plot based on very shaky evidence. Really highlights why the Hong Kong gov has been so determined to avoid jury trials at all cost in its political crackdown. hongkongfp.com/2024/08/29/bre…

We’ve been pushing hard for the HKETO Certification Act to be passed into law this year. It’s now been slated for a vote during China Week in the House of Representatives in September. If all goes well, this time next year the Hong Kong government will be out of the US for good.

As suggested by Galileo Cheng (see his thread in next tweet in this thread), the likely to be fake suicide note appeared to have first gained currency through Falun Gong-related media. If that’s the case, it’s yet another example of FLG-related media having loose relationships

Prince Edward subway station, Aug 31: a young man in black bowing to the subway station with a bouquet in his hands was boxed in by cops and taken into the Mongkok police station right next door. Several other people dressed in black were also stopped and had their id’s checked

During Xi Jinping’s visit to San Francisco last year, CCP-affiliated groups violently attacked peaceful protesters throughout the city. Responses from the White House and US gov have been tepid, and no charges filed. Excellent report from Shibani Mahtani. washingtonpost.com/world/interact…
