It's day 210 of Alaa's hunger strike. 64 MPs and Lords have written to British foreign secretary James Cleverly, demanding he stop ignoring Alaa's case as well as his sister Sanaa, who has been camped outside the FCDO for ten days now.

“We write now to ask for urgency. Alaa’s life is at serious risk,” they said. Since Liz Truss as foreign secretary pledged to act on Alaa's case then abandoned it for her leadership bid, there's been no public engagement on the case by any foreign secretary, including Cleverly.

We are nine days away from British ministers arriving at COP27 in Sharm el Sheikh, all while a British citizen is dying in an Egyptian prison. Alaa has said he intends to begin a full hunger strike on November 1st.

“Alaa is losing hope that the British government intends to do anything to save him,” said Sanaa. 'With only a few days until Cop27 begins in Egypt, I ask the British politicians going to attend the conference: are you really prepared to let your citizen die on your watch?”

The 64 MPs and Lords wrote: 'We understand that the UK government has lent significant support to the Egyptians to deliver a complex logistical operation, and to secure the legacy of Cop26. We ask that you also ensure that the UK uses the opportunity to secure Alaa’s release.”
