We believe in a strength-based approach to support, which means we get to know an individual to understand their strengths and talents and use those abilities to help with the areas they experience struggles.

Cognitive processes are vital to our everyday functioning but for individuals who are prenatally exposed to alcohol, their functioning may experience a range of impairments that impact their daily lives.

According to CanFASD, there has been no established safe level of alcohol during pregnancy. However, for many people alcohol use during pregnancy is a very complex issue and they need our support for a healthy pregnancy.

Presuming competence promotes a strength-based mindset that all individuals have the ability to learn and contribute in their own way!

Behaviour is a result of an individual's development so an individual with FASD may experience disordered behaviours as a result of their disability.

When supporting individuals with FASD, we need to normalize the concept of "Interdependence" over "Independence." Everyone relies on other people, for individuals with FASD it's important to have systems of support in place.

Sensory processing and sensory integration help with successful functioning, responding and making sense of the world, individuals with FASD may experience a variety of sensory issues that impact their daily lives.

The Network holds monthly Caregiver Meetings for caregivers from across the province to connect with each other for on-going support. These virtual meetings create a safe space to share experiences and learn from one another. The next meeting with be held on June 19

The Network believes that expectations and environments must be adjusted to fit the needs of individuals with FASD.

FASD is more common than a lot of people think. When we look at the rates of unplanned pregnancies and how many Canadians consume alcohol, it's easy to see how FASD can have a bigger impact in our communities than people may think. Learn more at saskfasdnetwork.ca

When supporting individuals with FASD, adjust expectations and create accommodations that meet the needs of each individual's developmental level.

Individuals with FASD often encounter judgement and discrimination for behaviours that others consider ‘odd’ or ‘inappropriate,’ but behavioural disabilities are a direct result of prenatal alcohol exposure. We recommend looking at behaviours as a form of communication.
