How long can this keep going on? We must change direction now. Eg, WA and NT mad rush to frack & export gas is beyond reason. ‘Ecological grief’: communities, economy suffer from damage to Great Barrier Reef smh.com.au/politics/feder…

First tagging work on Megamouth sharks suggest they dive to depths > 600m on the daily before coming back to the surface at night! Their sluggish look is deceptive... sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Sawsharks are small (<1.5m) sharks that occur in many different places around the globe. We described the trophic ecology of the common sawshark (below) and the southern sawshark around southeastern Australia.

Great work by Patrick Burke, PhD shows that sawsharks might actually be pelagic predators, going against many of the assumptions that we typically place on these animals.

Did you know acoustic pollution is a thing? We found boating, human developments were the main drivers of underwater noise in some of the largest estuaries in Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is a dichotomy: on one hand, still beautiful and filled with amazing creatures, but climate change is killing huge swathes of coral not obvious to most but very clear to scientists (as in this picture). We need climate action now Heron Island Research Station Griffith Science & Environment

Your regular reminder that it's a myth sharks have to swim to breathe. These white tip reef sharks love to chill under overhangs for hours on end, and you can find many around Heron Island doing just that. Griffith Science & Environment Griffith University Heron Island Research Station

Always great to see critically endangered White-spotted guitarfish hanging around at Heron Island Research Station. Just one of the many amazing animals students were exposed to during their Capstone projects. Despite looking very sharky, these animals are actually rays! Griffith Science & Environment
