The latest mortality data from Scotland strongly suggests another rise in drug-related deaths in 2023 after a big fall in 2022, an increase in deaths by suicide and little change in alcohol-specific deaths.

Now with added 2023 data for Scotland and the US, here's a new version of our analysis of 'deaths of despair' in the UK, US and Canada. Things heading in a slightly better direction in the US in 2023, although from a bad, bad place. Scotland, not so much.

The horrifying rise in drug-related deaths in Scotland has seen a *massive* shift in the age profile of people dying. In 2000 half of drug deaths were people under 30. In 2022 it was 10%. In 2000 8% of drug deaths were people over 45. In 2022 it was 49%.
