"Just the right balance of nerd and badass". Much science. Much snark. Too much politics.

This older man came thru work today and ordered his wife a latte.. I asked him hot or iced, and he paused.. β€œgive me both and I’ll drink the one she doesn’t want…” And that’s on 43 years of marriage. Well played, Sir.

What is the difference between adaptive and innate immunity? I'm rethinking the adaptive immune lectures for my introductory immunology course and it got me thinking. I see three main properties and a few that no longer make the list. Here's a 🧡 What do you think?

Finally, a happy drone story! A toddler in Alto, WI chased a cat into a 100 acre cornfield and got lost. Police used a search and rescue drone to locate his thermal signature and he was rescued a few hours later😁 goodnewsnetwork.org/toddler-gone-m…

My 8yo: I was sad at school today. I told the teacher. Me: I’m so glad you told her. Why were you feeling sad? 8: My bed was SO cozy. And then I had to get OUT of it for school. Solidarity, kiddo. That part remains brutal.

We don't have a housing shortage. We have a rural jobs shortage, and opportunity hoarding via school district segregation proliferation.

Hello new and current graduate students! Today's phrase of the day is "unlearn your hyper-independence" Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Grad school is hard, but not reaching out when you need help (many categories here) will make it impossible. Use your community.

Nice paper that goes deep into the loose correlation between mRNA & protein abundances and does some sensible adjustments/featurizations of mRNA to make it a better predictor of protein. Also very handy numbers here (median 17 mRNA vs. 50k protein copies per cell)

also 100 straight days below freezing could be fine. Little fluffy snow here and there, hovering around 25 degrees? no biggie. 100 straight days of -23 below is more analogous to 100 above 100.

Someone scheduled an 8:30am meeting for me last night after 5pm, so my daughter was listening to the zoom while eating chocolate oatmeal. Beeper: "are they talking about flying cars?" Me: "I wish. My research isn't that cool"
