To be fair, this is not wrong. Non-ethnic Russian regions are among the poorest, which means that people are a)more incentivized to volunteer and b)have fewer resources to avoid forced mobilization. But this is about poverty, not Russian vs non-Russian, and won't be fixed by DEI

I never questioned the existence of Russian imperialism, but the number of "Russia decolonizers" resorting to racist attacks for questioning their dogma is abysmally depressing. But hey, if this helps expose the tribalist racism at the core of this ideology, maybe not all is lost

As they used to say in communist Eastern Europe, you always need three security officers: one who knows how to read, the second one knows how to write, and the third one is there to supervise the two dangerous intellectuals

The level of absolutism + vitriol is way too high on far too many natsec issues these days--at precisely the time we need more nuance, pragmatism, and humility. This is a thoroughly unfair attack on a moderate + balanced piece trying to get at historical facts

Two scholars dare to publish an analysis based on facts rather than emotions and are open to reasonable debate about their interpretations of those facts. Drama ensues.

The reasons for this reverse migration (see Alex's next tweet) are Western policy choices. We are driving people back to Putin. Imagine if the brain drain was not shrinking, but instead growing bigger. Moralism isn't always the thing that will help Ukraine win.

A critical (how could it be otherwise) review by Joy Neumeyer of McGlynn, one of the worst offenders in the recent trend of books “explaining” Russia and Russians with dubious assertions based on Telegram and the media and very little time spent in Russia newleftreview.org/issues/ii146/a…

My take on the pitfalls (in this case, unfortunately, quite severe) of the rush to pronounce what Russians think about Putin and the invasion of Ukraine, for New Left Review newleftreview.org/issues/ii146/a…

Downfall! Out a week from today! (In the UK, at any rate). My and Anna Arutunyan‘s book with Ebury Publishing on how a thuggish entrepreneur’s rise and pyrotechnic fall reveals much about how Putin’s system works (and doesn’t)

It’s been a year since Yevgeny Prigozhin shocked the world with his ill-fated march on Moscow. Soon, it will be a year since Prigozhin was killed in a mysterious plane crash. What made him fly too close to the sun? Anna Arutunyan and Mark Galeotti tell the dead man's tales.
