Congratulations Mehdi Maanaoui and the team. Very important paper in field: in type 1 diabetes, IAK transplantation associated with a significantly better patient-graft survival compared with kidney transplantation alone, mainly due to a protective effect on the risk of death.

I’m having an islet morning in Sydney hall, after some faff with the metro system I’ve arrived in time to catch James Shaw giving his talk on clinical outcome assessment of donor islet transplantation #EASD2024

Great to hear Prof Shaw focussing on the importance of PROMs (patient reported outcome measures) in defining success of an islet graft. He describes an important composite measure of islet transplant success the Igls score #EASD2024

Now to Dr Timothy Kieffer from Canada, “Ensuring safety of stem cell derived islet products”. He starts by giving us a run down of all of the safety concerns relevant to stem cell transplants (you won’t be surprised to hear there’s a lot to think about) #EASD2024

Dr Kieffer’s talk is a wonderful walk through the development of stem cell therapies for diabetes, reminding us of the developments/and challenges with the Viacyte macroencapsulation trials which he describes as absolutely pioneering in the field #EASD2024
