My story on the Mariupol Drama Theatre, scene of Russian air strike two years ago today. Some of the actors have restarted the theatre in Uzhhorod in west Ukraine. Others have gone to work for the new, Russianised theatre in occupied Mariupol.

A story by me and Pjotr Sauer on the atmosphere in Crimea 10 years after annexation and two years into the full-scale war: nervousness, terror, denunciations, some quiet resistance and also a a fair bit of indifference.

The Russian Red Cross takes part in military training for kids, its director was (or is) on central staff of pro-Putin National Front, some of its senior staff parrot Kremlin war talking points.

Population transfers, kidnappings, broken families, deportations and spending on new propaganda outlets. Lots of interviews, as well as info from some leaked Kremlin internal documents, in my story about life in occupied Zaporizhzhia region.

Facebook reminds me it’s ten years since this scene at an air base in Crimea when the unarmed Ukrainians marched towards Russian troops, trying to to stop them from taking over, carrying WW2 Soviet victory banner to appeal to common sense of history (ultimately unsuccessfully)

He seemed like he could survive anything, but they managed to kill him in the end. Hard to watch the scenes from the funeral today.

For this story on the second anniversary of full-scale war, Photog Kasia Strek and I traveled from Zaporizhzhia, close to the front, to Uzhhorod in the very west of Ukraine.

Ukraine still stands strong, but after 2 years, exhaustion is increasing.

Wrote this after visiting different parts of Ukraine ahead of the two-year anniversary of full-scale war, how it’s changed Ukrainian society, the situation at the front and the signs that the third year of the war may be the hardest and bleakest yet. theguardian.com/world/2024/feb…

In Russia, it is not enough to kill an opposition leader. His ageing mother must travel to the Arctic Circle to search a prison colony and a morgue for his body. Russians laying carnations in his memory must be detained. Nothing personal. That’s the job. theguardian.com/world/2024/feb…

I wrote this on Alexei Navalny, & his long-standing belief that a Russian opposition politician should stay in Russia, expressed in interviews over the years.

Recently, he was ready to leave if exchanged, but now he won’t have that chance. A dark day.
