Thank you to our friends at The Mousa Boat for an amazing 24 hrs which started with a fabulous midnight trip to the Iron Age broch at Mousa to watch Storm Petrels returning ashore followed by a equally brilliant trip to the Noss seabird colonies with Gannets galore. Magical!

Currently watching five of the 27s pod of ORCAS off the North Mainland with our Shetland Wildlife group. Incredible views as they passed us only a few metres off the coast!

Bull Orca '34' from the 27s Northern Isles Community pod surfacing just a few metres away from our Shetland Wildlife group as we stood on the shoreline of the north Mainland, Shetland last week. Magical.

A fabulous start to our seventh Ultimate Shetland week of the season - at least 15 RISSO'S DOLPHINS - including a tiny calf - gave our group fabulous views off Sumburgh Head this morning. They included 'Floppy' who was first documented for Photo ID off Noss back in 2014.

Fabulous pic by 'Ultimate Shetland' June 2024 tour participant Christine Whiffen of bull '34' from the 27s #Orca pod as he swam by us just a few metres away from our shoreside vantage point. What a moment that was!

This splendid Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica, only the 5th record for Shetland, was seen on 13th July. Thankfully it ventured close enough for some decent images to be obtained on a drizzly day. Many thanks to Dave Fairhurst of Shetland Wildlife for telling me where to look.

As shot, and cropped versions of part of a pod of about 10 Risso's Dolphins Grampus griseus, seen swimming off the Shetland coast on 11th July Shetland Wildlife. The scarring and fin-damage may enable some of these individuals to be recognised if seen before, or identified in future.

Fabulous encounter with a pod of c.15 Risso's Dolphins as they moved south through Mousa Sound, Shetland this morning. Certainly some new additions to the photo ID catalogue there.

Comfortably my best view of a Red-throated Diver or Loon Gavia stellata to date, seen in lovely evening sunshine at Hillswick, Shetland on 9th July Shetland Wildlife. The cropped enlargement illustrates the subtleties of the bird's wonderful plumage.

Bog Orchids are very, very small and very, very rare here in Shetland. They are found at a handful of sites in wet acid bogs and flashes on Mainland, Yell and Papa Stour - but one of those sites just happens to be the biggest colony in Scotland. This afternoon Shetland Wildlife

A nice selection of fins and feathers to kickstart our Autumn tours here in Shetland over the last few days. Highlights have included Greenish, Icterine, Barred and Wood Warblers, Wryneck, Wood Sandpipers, Little Stint, several Minke Whales and a pod of Risso Dolphins.
