As a PhD student, lose this notion that your supervisor "gives" you the PhD! Actually, you earn it with your hard work and dedication! Of course, the supervisor guides you through the process, helps you grow, and mentors you to become an independent scientist but it's your PhD😎!

Usual advice I give my students as they embark on their PhD journey: Have at least one hobby, and a friend circle inside and/or outside the lab. PhD can be a very isolating journey; you need activities & people to cheer you up at times. Biopatrika PhDs of India Voices of Indian Academia

We are often unhappy with the tone of referee comments, audience questions etc. Such experiences may trigger a feedback loop when roles get switched. In our group, we discuss how to break this loop and implement constructive criticism. Being rigorous does not require being rude.

I keep reminding PhD students that THE most important outcome of a PhD is not their publications, conferences, awards etc., but they themselves after this journey. PhD is a learning process in how to learn new things, solve new problems you run into. Voices of Indian Academia Biopatrika

It's the story of many research journeys I have been a part of. Research is a self-correcting collective enterprise; our ideas evolve with new evidence/tools. I encourage my students to generously share their idea with their colleagues, so we can "fail" & learn faster together.

"Different people are good at different things, you should not compare yourself to others" - This advice by my PhD mentor during my 2nd year of PhD helped me tremendously. I tell my students the same - do not compare with others, but do compare to yourself a few months/years ago.

Another common discussion I have with my students: Many times we face people who criticise our work for many reasons (often unknown to us). It is OK to reflect on feedback received but not OK to be consumed by it to the extent of wounding one's self-confidence. Be semi-permeable!
