Today I published the first installment of a multi-part series at Forked Lightning on technological disruption in the labor market. To understand the future of work with AI, look to the past. The figure below stitches together U.S. employment data from 1880 to the present.

RCT introduction of a pollution market in Surat, Gujarat. Pollution fell by 20–30%, and efficiently — gains came from the firms who could cut pollution most effectively. Mortality benefits are *25 times* costs. An incredible state/research collaboration. 1/2

It's a hard task to follow John A. List. I did it twice in two days and I think I earned my keep 😁 It was great to present new work today (w/Karthik Muralidharan) on scaling EdTech and the core challenges in going from supplementary instruction to in-class instruction.

I am recruiting for a fully funded, 4-year PhD position in economics focused on migration&human capital, involving an impact evaluation of a major migration-related project in Central America. The application deadline is September 29. See details here: rug.nl/about-ug/work-….

Check out David's great summary of our new paper on how to run balance tests in RCTs! We have good news: your results are probably too pessimistic, and fixing them is very easy.

I'm thrilled that Alex Eble is following up long-term on these experiments. The initial effects were so large that there's actually a hope for these to be the Perry Preschool style demonstration project for foundational skills in Africa (except much larger in scope) 🤞🏼

My colleague Mitch Downey and Ferenc Szucs are looking for a full time RA, who will be supporting exciting projects on political polarisation, conspiracy theories in politics, and democratic accountability. #econtwitter #econRA su.se/english/about-…

Turns out statements such as this are protected by 1st amendment: "In light of the evidence presented by Data Colada, I believe that Francesca Gino committed research fraud."

India's working age population is about to overtake China's. But the size of India's labor force will remain behind China's for the foreseeable future, largely because of low participation of women in paid work. See interesting piece by Ashwini_Deshpande and Akshi here

My student Cristina Clerici defended her PhD thesis with confidence and pride today. Thanks to Lore Vanderwalle for being an outstanding opponent and to the committee for their work. It is wonderful to see our students grow, excel, and reach the finish line after years of hard work.

I just attended the annual meeting of the editorial board of The Review of Economic Studies. One message from the editors: REStud is interested in publishing the best work, no matter how short the articles are! If you have very good short papers, you might want to try REStud first.
