We Social Market Foundation (Sam Robinson specifically) have been saying for months that energy prices are high and liable to go up. Well here we are. We need a reformed, progressive Warm Homes Discount - not just for pensioners - to get through winter: smf.co.uk/publications/e…

Per our recent Social Market Foundation report on UK admission of international students smf.co.uk/wp-content/upl… 1. the UK is not alone in putting the brakes on its international student intake 2. both Canada and Australia have this year implemented more draconian restrictions to do so.

Keir Starmer has admitted that the winter fuel allowance is "not particularly well-designed" But restricting it is not enough. Writing in The i paper, Sam Robinson urges ministers to use some of the money saved from the winter fuel cuts to pay for an enhanced Warm Homes

Why should we stop freezing fuel duty? 1. It's a tax cut that helps wealthier households the most and poorest households the least

📢Catch me discussing the Winter Fuel Payment cuts and why we need a bigger, better Warm Home Discount to plug the gap on the Sky News podcast! WFP scheme is as badly designed as Keir Starmer says and the money could be better spent, but this winter is still going to be tough.

Problem 2: WHD doesn't really track different levels of need very well, which is why there's a good case for a banded discount to better reflect this. Read more in my Social Market Foundation briefing on it: smf.co.uk/publications/e…

Its not that MAID in Canada doesnt have problems- as a Canadian it very much does- but these problems are solvable. We can learn from where Canada's gone wrong, and use safeguards being deployed abroad to get it right Expect more from Social Market Foundation on this in coming months!
