“Golf is a game in which the attitude of mind counts for incomparably more than mightiness of muscle. Given an equality of strength and skill, the victory in golf will be to him who is captain of his soul.” — Arnold Haultain Coming soon on the Duffer’s Literary Companion .

In the spring of 1930, after watching Bobby Jones with the Southeastern Amateur, Scotsman Bobby Cruickshank decided there was no beating the Atlanta star that year. He bet $500 on Jones to win the Grand Slam. It paid $60,000 — more than $1 million in today’s currency. Nice bet!

These days, I do not wander far from Eleanor Helme’s delightful book “After the Ball” and its glorious illustrations by Charles Ambrose.

This is the greatest John Ball story ever told. It’s from 1912, when Ball was 50 years old. Robert Hunter tells the tale in his book The Links. Enjoy! #golfhistory

The first time women ever competed at St Andrews was in the British Ladies’ Championship of 1908. Mabel Stringer, the first professional women’s golf correspondent, remembers that momentous occasion in her 1924 book, Golfing Reminiscences. #golfhistory

This morning, women golfers will walk in the footsteps of two of the greatest ever to play their game — Glenna Collett and Joyce Wethered. In 1929, over the Old Course, they staged what The New York Herald Tribune called “the greatest women’s match ever played.” #golfhistory

As always, Rich adds a special dimension to The Duffer’s Literary Companion with his brilliant, artistic summaries of our rambling discussions. 🙏 Rich. We appreciate you!

Enjoying a hard-fought Curtis Cup. The first one, nearly a century ago at Wentworth, featured the two greatest women golfers the world had ever seen — Joyce Wethered and Glenna Collett, shown here mid-round. #golfhistory

This month’s Duffer’s Literary Companion, coming Friday, is about Bobby Jones’ Down the Fairway. One rabbit hole we did not explore, but listeners should, is Jones on instruction. He is a great teacher. I am partial to this gem — with illustrations by Anthony Ravielli. Enjoy!

The house itself appears to be gone now — a century later — but it was on this leafy green street in Providence, RI, that the great Glenna Collett grew up. #golfhistory
