I asked Mantle about it well after he retired. He said that looking back, it was probably a dumb thing to do, that he should’ve gotten into a rundown to let the tying run score from 3rd. But as it happened, his instinctive/athletic dive back to 1st base achieved the same result.

Since pitches were first tracked in 1988, the Chicago Cubs are the only MLB team to have 3 separate 2-strike RBI extra-base hits in the bottom of the 9th in a victory. They all came off of Ryan Helsley, who hadn't allowed a 2-strike extra-base hit all season before today.
