One of the hardest and best skills to develop:

How to reset quickly.

When things go wrong, do you let it linger, ruminate on it, and spiral? Or are you able to move on.

Get back to a place where you can perform.

Decathletes (and field event athletes) are really good at this.

Can you take off your watch for a run or workout?

People often feel withdrawal symptoms like anxiety when you take away their watch or tracker.

Or as Anna Lembke said, we can 'become compulsively fixated on these wearable devices — in a way that is akin to addiction.”

When I was in HS I used to eat a full dinner—steak, chocolate milk, you name it—and then head right out the door for 9 miles at 6min pace

It sucked for a week, then your body adapted & it was normal

The lesson: We can make the overwhelming feel routine

Focus on the effort, not the outcome.

Effort is within your control. The end result is not.

Make the goal to get the most out of yourself, to see how you can navigate discomfort to keep the effort there.

We can’t deny reality to fit our preference.

We have to deal with reality.

That’s what science is all about. Going where the evidence demands.

Two characteristics I've noticed in high performers:

-Consistency emphasized more than short-term Intensity: They stack good work week after week, month after month.

-They know how to flip the switch to compete, instead of always being hypercompetitive.

A marathon is 99% aerobic.'

Yet, marathoners still do flat out sprints.

Why? Because the energy system contribution is a very small piece of the puzzle. Sprints provide a stimulus that benefits training & performance

Same applies in the opposite direction. Don't mimic, prepare

I've spent a decade working with Olympians and pro athletes from every major league during their biggest moments.

The basics aren’t sexy.
They don’t sell.
They aren’t a quick fix.

They are simple to understand and yet difficult to practice consistently.

But they work!

Training isn't about mimicking the sport.

It's preparing for the demands!

If mimicking was the key, we'd just run time trials and specific intervals every day. We don't.

Yet, too often in team sports especially, training devolves into mimicking the sport.

Parents: Listen to an absolute hockey legend on youth sports:

'Stay out of the way. Let them decide. Let them own their hockey career. Let them own the fun. It doesn't matter what they're playing, as long as they are happy.'

One of the most important lessons I learned early in my career: Those who sell their soul and integrity for success almost always end up miserable.

They think the achievement will fill the hole in them.

It won't.
