There’s a tradition that the Church at Kilcatherine was once a convent. This is interesting because the Cailleach is sometimes thought to be a nun - probably a reference to her description as ‘The Veiled One’. Is this tradition tapping into something much older than the Church?
Just down the road from the Cailleach Beara Stone lies the 12th century remains of Kilcatherine Church, we’ll need to find out why a church is dedicated to St Catherine so close to the ancient Cailleach
Our search for the Cailleach has seen that the Catherine of Kilcatherine is not Catherine at all. It is an anglicisation of the early and mysterious St. Caithinghearn. Also, puzzlingly, known as ‘The Cat goddess’. We are getting back to the 7th century. Curiouser and curiouser!
