This c. 1900s corset was likely a working woman’s corset, due to its gentle shape and numerous repairs and alterations. Although the corset is machine sewn, there are numerous inaccuracies to the stitching, suggesting that it was potentially home sewn. underpinningsmuseum.com/museum-collect…

This c. 2014 ‘Amilee’ silk gown was inspired by John Singer Sargent’s painting ‘Madame X’. The gown’s bodice is cut from a single piece of silk, with carefully considered pleats through the back to support the bust. There are over 30 hours of skilled labour in this garment alone.

This maternity #corset was intended as a lightweight foundation garment to support the changing body throughout pregnancy, with a particular focus on supporting the back and bust. Contrary to popular belief, maternity corsets did not compress the abdomen but instead support it.

Happy birthday, #JacquesFath! The Parisian couture house of Jacques Fath was opened in 1937, quickly rising to prominence and critical acclaim. Much of his inspiration is said to have come from Fath’s wife and muse Geneviève. She oversaw the house upon Fath’s death in 1954.
