“But how will we pay for it?”some people ask me. And I tell them that over time it’ll pay for itself! It costs an insane amount of taxpayer $ to lock people up. As more people get treatment and get better instead of rotting in jail, the state will save a huge amount! 🧵6/9

In fact, NY courts estimate that every $1 invested in treatment, the state saves $2.21!! With returns like that, we can’t afford not to do it! 🧵7/9

TY to our TNJ champions from the Mid-Hudson region!🩷 We cannot arrest/incarcerate our way out of a statewide mental health & substance use crisis. We are grateful for these legislative powerhouses for knowing that true public safety comes from addressing underlying root causes.

The DOC just confirmed that 56% of the people incarcerated at Rikers have a mental health diagnoses. Rikers is has become the city’s biggest mental health facility. These individuals have little or no access to meaningful care while they are locked up. #ShutRikers
