The extent of both #Antarctic and #Arctic sea ice remain anomalously low, which is also not too far from last year's historic satellite-era record... More sea ice graphics available at zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-ice…

Scary: Svalbard AirPort (78.14N) has with 8.5C set a new heat record for summer medium temperature 3rd year in a row. The gap between the old record last summer and the new one is 0.8C, the highest jump ever since the observations started in 1976. 9 years ago the record was 6.7C

100 years of September sea ice - another one of those wait-until-the-end animations... Total data set available from 1850 through 2017. Summary of methods: carbonbrief.org/guest-post-pie…. I also have another version at zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-ice….

Another summer with the warming hole-like pattern. Check out our recent paper on this topic: "Why has the summertime central U.S. warming hole not disappeared?" (doi.org/10.1175/JCLI-D…)

Nearly the entire #Arctic ice edge is reduced compared to only a few decades ago, but the Beaufort Sea in particular is seeing massive areas of open water that would have normally been ice-covered. Data: nsidc.org/data/g02202/ve…. Concentration = fraction of sea ice in a location.

August 2024 #Arctic sea ice extent was the 4th lowest on record... This was 1,990,000 km² below the 1981-2010 average. August ice extent is decreasing at about 9.88% per decade. Data: National Snow and Ice Data Center.

Another look at #Arctic sea ice extent in the Beaufort Sea region, which is currently near record low levels... *Note that the basin is geographically constrained (same maximum sea ice cover = flat line; zacklabe.files.wordpress.com/2022/08/b203f-…). Data from National Snow and Ice Data Center.

August sea surface temperature anomalies over the last 100 years through 2024. Widespread warm anomalies continue over the Northern Hemisphere extratropics, while signs of La Niña continue in the equatorial Pacific. Data from ERSSTv5 at psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded/d…

Another season of tracking freezing degree days in the high #Arctic has ended. This is a simple measure of relative cold integrated with time. Fortunately, this season was again less anomalous than in recent years (i.e., not as warm). Follow along daily: zacklabe.com/arctic-tempera…

Fantastic team work here. In the end, the Gulf Stream is *not* slowing down and the #AMOC ... just marginally. That's fascinating and relevant for climate modeling and the current and future needs for ocean observing! nature.com/articles/s4146…
