Congratulations to Drs. Glazar and Bekker! 🚀 Always a pleasure to visit IMO and catch up with science friends over invigorating discussions.

Here’s a paper that will get zero press because it looks totally specialist, not to say obscure. It’s about how an important class of transcription factors regulate genes. But I think it's worth dissecting because it raises a wider question.Bear with me... pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

Two new preprints from my group today---this one was led by Dandan Peng with an assist from Obadiah Mulder. Dandan benchmarked a bunch of leading ARG-estimation methods with respect to a specific goal (1/n)

The term "foundational" is supposed to mean subsequent models can be built on the model. This excellent analysis suggests otherwise. TBH, I cannot see any model in biology, at current data density, being "foundational", so can we stop using this?

Last day to apply to a postdoc in ML in my group. If you like digital pathology / spatial transcriptomics / computer vision and even genetics(!) please apply: careers.humantechnopole.it/o/postdoc-in-m…

There was a limit of 50 papers at journal we recently submitted to. Our paper had 92 refs in biblio. I argued that since our paper was "half mathematical and half biological" (in itself nonsensical of course) they ought to double the limit... ...it worked.

Levels of gene expression matter! So how can you control a transgene precisely? Is there a tool that can ensure uniform control & the ability to adjust the setpoint of expression from a single promoter? Introducing DIAL! 🧵 (1/n) Link: doi.org/10.1101/2024.0…

god I love it when you get to the last paragraph of an Introduction and it says "The remainder of this paper is structured as follows." non-theoretical/mathematical biologists should LEARN THIS TRICK and use it always.

phew, 3.5yo can be unsparing on a Sunday morning jaunt [loudly & audibly as we slowly bike past a runner] dad, that man is running very very slowly Why is he running so slowly? Maybe he is sick? He also needs sunscreen. I hope he's running home to his mommy to get his sunscreen.

I just had another of those first days. I love this tweet so---for it gives us all space to be nervous on the first day of classes. If Steve (who literally wrote the book on it) is, then we too are allowed to be nervous on each first day.
