Hospitals have patients, nurses and doctors 24/7 --other members of the teams needed for care are 7-4, 5 days a week at best. Every weekend things slow down and there is a crisis most long weekends. Somehow, this completely predictable issue leads to emergency emails routinely.

As a rural specialist who has been in Northern Alberta for the past 12 years, I can compare the state of healthcare today with rural healthcare when I first arrived here. Capacity just wasn’t an issue in 2011. If an emergency came in, we handled it. There was no triaging of

Just today I was talking to an ER doc who was expressing her frustration that this is becoming the new normal. There is nothing normal about this.

This is the reality across our province…. And one refrain I often hear when this is brought up is “it’s bad across Canada”… as if that means nothing can be done… It means we have to be competitive in AB, and we have to plan to deliver HC in the face of global HCW shortages

Wonder if other providers and patients have things to add to this list or stories of these things happening in real life. 🤔

As a rural doc who has been in practice only 6 years, I could never have imagined how bad it could get in so little time. I used to think I'd enjoy 30+ years in a career I love. Political mismanagement continues to accelerate the collapse. We can do better. United Conservative Party of Alberta #abpoli

Dr. Alika Lafontaine MD Excellent post. I started practice in AB 15 years ago and I echo what you say. As a family doctor, I am actually able to handle less patients (15-20% less) than 15 years ago because I have to handle more and more of their needs being unmet by the rest of the system.

Love this idea to track healthcare funding I’d also take internet sleuths on Reddit, Inc. as an interim step, a lot of the info is out there it just has to be put together Great reporting by The Canadian Press bringing this info together for the first time in a news story recently

Agree and may be the breakthrough for access pts are waiting for Hope builders of these don’t forget an inviolable rule in healthcare tech however Healthcare tech that doesn’t enhance human to human connection always makes systems worse Case study, EMRs vs AI Scribes

AI can’t do a trigger point injection, a speculum exam or intubate While I appreciate this sentiment, we aren’t there yet If folks want undertrained humans to do this like the trend is going in the UK however, he might be right Not good for anyone if systems crumble either
