A lock is simply a chamber with gates at either end. By emptying or filling that chamber with water, your boat can move up or down onto a new section of the waterway. Here's how to boat through locks ow.ly/535i50PgQ3e

Side fenders are for mooring. They should be raised whilst cruising, and definitely not dangling whilst navigating a lock. Don't forget to lift them when you cast off. Lost fenders frequently foul lock gates and can lead to your boat getting wedged or hung up in the lock.
