Pleased to speak at Race, Crime & Justice in Britain & its Empire conference Law & Social Justice Research. I shared recent research International Slavery Museum on uprisings by Black seafarers in 1850s Liverpool. Long time coming but it's a relief this is over. Very grateful to PCS Liverpool Museums branch committee for getting us here. Four months of picket lines, through wet, windy waterfront days - and yet the comradeship & camaraderie made it a positive experience. Up the workers! ✊🪧
Busy, productive week. Represented International Slavery Museum at 'Troubled relationships: Church and society in dealing with the colonial legacy' in Würzburg. Managed some good museuming either side of the conference. Decolonial walking tour of Berlin's African Quarter probably my highlight.
Nice piece about colleagues' work Walker Art Gallery. 'Carving Out Truths' has introduced new artworks and perspectives to the sculpture gallery, and really livened up the place in the process. Well worth a trip to William Brown St! theguardian.com/uk-news/articl…
Really enjoyed HistoryLab+ conference. Lots of interesting papers and International Slavery Museum curators got useful feedback about our ideas for displaying histories of slavery and abolition. Thanks to all the organisers and Wilberforce Institute for hosting two stimulating days.
Loved 'The Valleys' exhibition Amgueddfa Cymru | Museum Wales. Beautiful array of artworks, thoughtfully, lovingly curated and co-curated: the section by Dowlais Visual Art Group was outstanding. The whole thing really felt 'of' South Wales.** ( **from my non-native p-o-v, admittedly.)
